About Alvernia University

Alvernia University is a private Franciscan Roman Catholic university located in Reading, Pennsylvania. In 2008, the organization, originally known as Alvernia College, changed its name to a university. Alvernia University was established in 1958 by the Bernardine Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis as a four-year liberal arts college and later as a college for the sisters.
Several of the college’s renovated classrooms and offices were used to teach in elementary and secondary schools prior to 1958. The college’s first building, Francis Hall, was built in 1926 and formerly housed an orphanage. Alvernia received a charter from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1960, and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools first recognized the school in 1967.
In 1961, the college accepted its first female lay students. Male students were first admitted as commuting students in 1971 and as resident students in 1973.
Alvernia University received status from the Pennsylvania Department of Education in 2008, the year it celebrated its 50th anniversary. Alvernia University offers more than 50 undergraduate majors and minors. Pre-professional courses in dentistry, law, medicine, pharmacy, and veterinary science can be taken. Master’s degrees are awarded in occupational therapy, business administration, nursing, community counseling, education, and liberal studies. The Alvernia University Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program lasts seven years. A doctoral program in leadership is also available.
Since 1967, Alvernia has been recognized by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The education plan for elementary and secondary teachers has received approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The occupational therapy program has received full accreditation from the American Council of Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE).
